I’m a HUGE Gershwin fan, and have always loved this song, but it’s especially sad listening to Amy Winehouse singing it.   I love the linear melody – rising and falling.  I love how the line “someone to watch over me” starts with three descending notes, then “watch” jumps up a perfect fifth, then down an octave for “over me”.  It’s almost a literal interpretation of the lyrics – someone watching over you would be above you.

The song has been covered by over 55 different artists.  Some of my favorite versions are:  Brad Mehldau, Chet Baker, and of course Stephane Grappeli.
